What Is EPILEPSY ?

Epilepsy is a disorder of the central nervous system in which the brain activities become abnormal, resulting in seizures or periods of unusual behaviour, sensations, and sometimes even loss of awareness. It is a disease in which the nerve cell activity of the brain is malfunctioned. It can also be known as ‘seizure disorders’. Epilepsy is recognised as the fourth most common neurological disorder and it tends to affect people of all ages. Anybody can develop Epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a chronic disorder, the characteristic of which is repeated, unprovoked seizures.

Epilepsy is a common disease in India with more than 1 million cases per annum. It is usually self diagnosable, and is not curable. But can be assisted with treatment.

TYPES OF SEIZURES:

  • FOCAL SEIZURES: Focal or partial seizures are the type of seizures which show abnormal activity in just one part of the brain. Symptoms of focal seizures can be mixed up with other neurological disorders, like migraine, mental illness or narcolepsy. Focal seizures are further classified into two categories:
  • Focal seizures without a loss of consciousness: It doesn’t involve a loss of consciousness.
  • Focal seizures with a loss of consciousness: It involves a loss of consciousness.
  • GENERALISED SEIZURES: In generalised seizures, seizures affects all areas of the brain. There are six types of generalised seizures:
  • Absence seizures: Absence seizures cause subtle body movements such as eye blinking or lip smacking. These seizures may take place in clusters and cause a short loss of awareness.
  • Tonic seizures: Tonic seizures causes muscles stiffening. They usually muscles the back, arms and legs and might lead to falling on the ground.
  • Atonic seizures: Atonic seizures, often named as drop seizures, cause muscle control loss, which results in sudden collapsing of the body.
  • Clonic seizures:Clonic seizures cause rhythmic jerking muscle movements. They usually affect the neck, face and arms.

  • Myoclonic seizures: Myoclonic seizures can be recognised as sudden brief jerks or twitches of your arms and legs.
  • Tonic clonic seizures: Tonic clonic seizures can cause an cause an abrupt loss of consciousness, stiffening of the body, and sometimes even losing control of bladder or tongue biting.

CAUSES OF EPILEPSY:

In most cases the epilepsy, the cause cannot be determined. A number of things can lead to seizures. Possible causes include:

  • Traumatic brain injury(TBI)
  • Scar on the brain post brain surgery (post-traumatic epilepsy)
  • A serious illness or very high fever
  • Stroke is considered as the most common cause of epilepsy in people aged over age 35.
  • Other vascular diseases.
  • Insufficient supply of oxygen to the brain
  • Brain tumors or cysts in the brain.
  • Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.
  • Genetics
  • Neurological disorders.
  • Brain malformation, prenatal injury, insufficient supply of oxygen during birth.
  • Contagious diseases like, AIDS and meningitis.

SYMPTOMS OF EPILEPSY:

As said above, stroke or seizures are the most common cause of epilepsy. The symptoms of epilepsy may vary depending on the person and the type of seizure.

Simple partial seizures:

  • Changes in sense of taste, smell, sight, hearing, or touch
  • dizziness
  • tingling and twitching of limbs

Complex partial seizures:

  • staring blankly
  • unresponsiveness
  • performing repetitive movements

Absence seizures:

  • Repetition of movements such as lip smacking or blinking.

Tonic seizures:

  • Muscle stiffness

Myoclonic seizures:

  • Impulsive twitching of the arms and legs.

Tonic clonic seizures:

  • stiffening of the body
  • shaking
  • loss of bladder or bowel control
  • biting of the tongue
  • loss of consciousness

Atonic seizures:

  • Loss of muscle control
  • Collapsing of body

Clonic seizures:

  • Recurring jerking movements of the neck, face and arm.

HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENTS:

Epilepsy cannot be cured completely. But with the help of homeopathic treatment, the recurrence of it can be reduced.

Homeopathic medicines are safe to use and has zero side effects, since they are derived from natural substances and are very cautiously administered in highly diluted doses.

HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES:
